Matt Belzile Interview on Push.ca

Matt Belzile’s No Rookie – by Matt Houghton

It seems like Ottawa-born shredder Matt Belzile graduated from grom to veteran in the blink of an eye. Wasn’t it just yesterday when his first am interviews appeared? Reality check: It was in fact five years ago when he moved to Whistler and got hooked up by Westbeach (who he still rides for and also works for). One year later he added K2 to his sponsor list, and began filming with Alterna Films under the mentorship of then teammate and current boss Jon Cartwright.

While Belzile began, he no doubt looked up to top Canadian dogs like Cartwright, but he can now count himself among them. He splits his time between contests and a full-time filming schedule with ease (witness his totally bananas backside 1260s at this year’s Shakedown), and somehow manages to be a contributing member of the Westbeach staff; not just a team rider who breezes in and out of product meetings and photo shoots. He’s also stepped up to the top video ranks, earning a spot on the Standard Films rider roster this season.

“I’ve been trying to get into American videos for a while,” he explains. “Last season I filmed for Variety Pack’s Not Bad, based out of Utah. I had a decent part in it and my American K2 team manager worked some magic and got me on Standard. I was pretty hyped on that!”

The best part about Belzile is that he’ll be the last person to tell you these things. Low-key and cool to a fault, he typically seems content to allow his accomplishments (and his avid supporters) speak on his behalf. I ran into him a few times this season, and even did a run or two with him: in the Blackcomb beginner park with Jesse Fox and Robjn Taylor. The fact that he was as stoked to hit some tiny jibs with friends as he was to take down the mighty Shakedown jump says it all.

POWDER riding in Montana…Cinco a Siete de Mayo

I just had 3 great days of riding good cold powder, camping in the snow and lots of hiking back here in Montana. Yes it is may, we do have long, cold winters, we don’t have electricity, and we used horses and a wolf to get to the top of the mountains we rode.  With loads of new snow covering all parts of Montana from here in the Flathead down to Beartooth Pass, the opportunities for spring/summer shred will be aplenty.

Day 1- I just got home to Montana yesterday after over 3 months on the road…..i wake up to fresh snow in the valley, which means the mountains got a lot more and a lot colder of snow! We (Brett Bates, Brett Bacon and myself) decide to hike the local ski resort Whitefish Mountain (Big Mountain) and see how the snow is up top.

The hike up Big Mountain is easy, the only thing that made it hard was knowing that my snowmachine is stuck in Seattle and with it we would have done zero hiking all 3 days....instead we hiked a total of probably 11 hours.

Turns out it’s epic blower January snow!! We put in some turns, catch some airs and work our bootpack all afternoon.

We did five laps on the top north facing pitch of Big Mountain (all around 500) then took one long run down the front, fully satisfied. To think I pondered staying home today, I had the best turns I took at home all season. We proceded to drive around Whitefish and holler at innocent pedestrians “Hey! I’m pretty sure i had a much better day than you!”

Day 2-3 We wake up in our cozy beds (all of us ”living” with our parents) on the 6th and it’s still pretty cold out. We take a late start and head up towards the Jewel Basin, a mecca of hiking, wilderness lakes, wildlife, and all the other things Montana is all about. After a lot of hiking and a tiny bit of snowboarding the Bretts and I set up camp.

AAAAHHH...a cold Spaten next to a fire miles away from any other humans. Bates warms up his toeskis....and his belly.

Nothing like waking up, walking 40 feet and looking down fun powder lines....so nice to be home.

We do the same thing here in the Jewel; put in some turns, a bootpack back up and lap a sick face of chutes, spines and senders.

It’s always a good feeling getting home after the winter’s travels, but when you can get home and ride powder it’s unreal. I feel so fortunate to have roots in this place and every time I’m here I’m overwhelmed by the soul that this place exudes…..

We have been shooting a bunch with the Contour HD POV cameras this season. Mostly for snowboarding. Eero Niemela decided to test it out on the paint ball corse during the Grenade Games. It still works! Nice Job Eero.
