SEATTLE, WASHINGTON (December 15, 2011) – K2 Snowboarding and Gretchen Bleiler are proud to announce that they have extended their partnership through 2014. Bleiler, an X Games champion and Olympic medalist, has been an integral part of the K2 International Pro Team for more than eight years helping to progress women’s snowboarding through not only her on-snow accomplishments but through her involvement in the K2 Alliance and the development of products like her K2 EcoPop snowboard, Contour boots, and Agogo bindings.
“It feels really good to have just re-signed with K2 for another three
years,” said Gretchen Bleiler. “K2 has become my Northwest family and throughout the years we’ve accomplished a lot together from Olympic and X Games medals to magazine covers, cool new cutting edge technologies and super fun graphics. I always feel so grateful for K2’s support and am really looking forward to the next three years, I have a feeling they’re going to be epic!”
“I can’t express my excitement enough to be working with Gretchen for another three years,” said Peter Mullenbach, K2 Snowboarding International Team Manager. “Aside from being an amazing snowboarder, Gretchen is a great person who has helped shape all aspects of women’s snowboarding while sustaining a proper style and personality for women and girls around the world to admire. She is passionate, competitive and dedicated; we are truly looking forward to the next three years with one of snowboarding’s great gems.”
Fresh off the training grounds of New Zealand, Gretchen is busy preparing for a full season of competition including the US Grand Prix, Dew Tour and X Games among others. Additionally, K2 engineers will continue seeking product feedback from Gretchen with the idea of creating the most advanced and effective women’s snowboard products on the market. Keep your eyes on Gretchen, she’s just getting started.
For snowboarder Gretchen Bleiler, the decision to pose naked in ESPN The Magazine’s third-annual Body Issue, which hits newsstands Friday, was not made lightly. “I took it so seriously,” she says. “It’s such a vulnerable thing for an athlete to do.”

She knows from experience. In February 2004, Bleiler appeared on the cover of FHM weaing only body paint. A few months after taking silver at the 2006 Winter Olympics, she posed for Jane magazine’s “clothes off our back” feature covered only by a not-so-strategically placed sheet. Bleiler even appeared once before in the buff in ESPN The Mag, in the 2004 Winter X Games preview issue, along with four other athletes willing to bear it all. But she swore she’d never do it again. At least not until it was on her terms. She says she was young each of those times and felt pressure to say yes. More than once, she felt the magazine’s editors didn’t portray her image as promised.
“That’s why I turned down the Body Issue the first two times they asked,” she says. “I wasn’t ready. This time, I was saying yes because I wanted to do it. And I felt confident in my decision.”
In each of the first two Body Issues, one action sports athlete was featured in the much-anticipated and all-nude Bodies We Want section: surfers Claire Bevilacqua in 2009 and Kelly Slater in 2010. This year’s issue features three: Bleiler, Olympic snowboarder Louie Vito and four-time world surfing champ Steph Gilmore.
Come hang this Friday and celebrate the re-opening of Buckman’s in King of Prussia, PA with some of snowboarding’s top athletes including Gretchen Bleiler, Danny Kass, Louie Vito and more. check the flyer for details.
Ole Ole Ole! It’s that time of the year….catalog shoot time. So while many of you are probably trying to squeeze in the last few days of float life, BBQ’s, beaches, bikini’s, warm weather surf and all those other wonderful things about summer. We decided to end it early and take some of the team down to Chile to shoot the 2011.12 Catalog, and what can we say? Such a good decision!
The Mike Yoshida
First met up with K2 Staff Photographer and video cameo master Mike Yoshida. Between the two of us we had around 14 bags including our photo gear. Packed everything into my girfriend’s Subaru. Not enough room for me and Mike so we had to get a cab as well. Good times. Then we had an interesting challenge of trying to get 10 bags of product onto a jumper flight to LAX. Thanks to the counter ladies at United for the straight hook up! We met the majority of the rest of the crew in Los Angeles which consisted of Jordan Mendenhall, Travis Parker, Gretchen Bleiler, Leanne Pelosi, and one of our filmers for the trip Sam Hiltner. 13 hours, a quick stop in Lima, some delicious wine, and a couple Advil PM’s and we were in Santiago.
Customs in Chile is pretty mellow. Brought in over 30 snowboards. Helps if you pretend not to know what they are asking you.
The drive up from Santiago to the Farallones area is a fun one. Over 39 counted switch backs on a road not much wider than your car in some areas climbing around 4,000 feet. We arrived at our house for the trip right next to El Colorado Resort, one of the first houses to built up here. Farallones is next to four resorts El Colorado, Valle Nevado, La Parva, and Farallones. Every window has a view of the Andes. Not bad.
